Thank you again!
I recall seeing photos years ago (online; site must have been "Strayhoud") )of SILVERSIDES that were still being used in Bay-area commute service i nthe later 1960s; those big workhorses would have been at least 20 (or more) years old by that late date, a testimony to thier solid, rugged construction...........

.......hardto believe that the classic 1934 comedy, "IT HAPPENED ONE BIGHT" was filmed 92 years ago......so sobering that everything and everyone associated with that clsissc "Hound" comedy has long since disappeared, except for the "GREYHOUND"name.
How bright the future looked for the 'hound, back in '34!

When I was on temporary assignment for Greyhound at San Francisco in December of 1971, they were still using 1948 PD-4151 Silversides's on the East Bay trips to Concord and other routes during the commute hours out of the Transbay Transit Terminal. So they were 23 years old, and counting, at that time.
And they were indeed, in remarkably good shape. They probably could have lasted another ten years with minimal maintenance.... |

traildriver......
I guess, after all, the old saying is true....."you cab't keep a good bus down"........
A sa kid (early/mid-1060s) I clearly remember "SILVERSIDES" being used iin charter service....not to mention a few "long in the tooth" 743s................

Further..........
The last "SILVERSIDES" I ever saw in my area waz close to 40 years ago; for years, two of them (in different paint) sat behind a service station on Route #4 in Ridgefield, heading east.
They had obviously been sitting therfe for quite some time; certainly hope at least one was saved..............

My seventh grade teacher took us on a three day trip to Washington, DC in 1960. We chartered a bus from a local Queens company (Singerman), and first a PD-4151 showed up, but when our teacher asked to see the certificates for the bus, there was no current insurance papers. They could not come up with one, and after much wrangling with the driver, and the owner on the phone, a replacement bus arrived a couple of hours later.
It was another ex-Greyhound, but this time, an ancient Yellow 743 Super Coach. By far, the oldest coach, (not sure if it was a '36,7,8, or 9 build), I have ever ridden, not have had the pleasure to ride on a conventional front engined coach, except for some museum pieces for short rides.
It did have proper papers... |

While only a few have been preserved or restored, there are many still rolling happily along as converted recreational vehicles, although many are highly modified to being almost unrecognizable... |

Do you have info on about when GREYHOUND began retiring "SILVERSIDES" from"front line" duties in the East?
I would guess that a number might have been replaced by 4106s............

Can't say for sure, although when I entered the business in 1968, they were all gone in the East. Even the 4103's were gone by then, although other carrier's still ran those. The 4104's were the oldest in the fleet. |

NYO--If you like nostalgia (I know you do )
Take a look at this obvious 'Company" piece on Youtube.
Poor print quality, but great views of the Silverside in action, inside and out...

Thanks for the link and the info!
Was GREYHOUND still using any ACF-BRILL" IC-41s" post-1960, in any areas?
I would guess that the "Flexies" had already been sold off by that late date............

I don't think so...I never saw any. Read that they were sold off by 1957... |

Wow, those "41s" were not all that long for the Hound's "jennel"; if they were gone by'57, rest assured these handsome buses quickly found new operators, given that they were only about a decade old.
I DO recall seeing some in charter service, back in the early/mid-70s......they were truly STYLISH-looking buses, indeed..........
(TRAILWAYS had quitea few "41s", also)

Speaking of ACF-BRILLs..............
Through the mid-1960s, "C-44s"were rostered by
DE CAMP
INTER-CITY
SOMERSET.
These big buses were indeed handsome, and I can still hear their deep bass growling, even today!
Mom and I often rode them on DE CAMP's #22 and INTER-CITY's #97; I ialso saw those magnificent SOMERT buses near the "Port"and the Lincoln Tunnel.
The lst of these tough=sounding buses vanished around 1967...................I miss them still.........
