Perhaps not ironically, Camelbacks were known as "widow makers" in some circles; this was due to several reasons,including the firemen being precariously positioned on the rear deckof the cab, and, the engineer's position right over the drivers, if a side rod should snap and come up through the can floor.
Despite this, the CNJ had a MORE than decent safety record with their "Came;s", the last of which wer eretired in 1954....................

Also...........
In relating this to buses, when rear-engined, "flat nosed" buses began to become commonplace, not a few drivers felt that they were now in a more vunerable position, in case of a collision, wiithout the "protection" provided by the long hood/engine................

In 1923, PSNJ purchased a group pf FAGEOLS, for use on ESSEX Division routes.
These buse swere unusual in that they had arched leaded glass transomes over the windows, and there was a eooden door for the driver, adjacent to his "work station".
I've only seen one photo of these interesting-looking buses, in all my years of pS research (pic was taken in front of the PS Termina lin Newark)........

"Required attire..............."
Most photos of early intercity busdrivers show them nattily attited in military-type puttees.
This was not only because the "military" look was then in vogue for intercity drivers, but also, the puttees/boots offered protection from the heat of the engine (recall, this was back in the days of "'puller" buses.
This style of driver attire lasted well into the193-s..............

Further..............
In those long-ago days of early intercity bus travel, the drivers also had to be skilled mechanics, tackling virtually every sort of repair, back when there could be long distances between "filling stations"/garages.
If there was a serious breakdown, the driver would have to fund the nearest pay phone, and call in to have the bus towed into the nearest repair facility.
These "iron men" also had to change flats (look at old photos, and how many intercitty buses bsck then, carried spares at the rear).........
