THe last TARS cars in "da Bronx" were indeed "TROLLEYS", as they used overhead wires; the cars that ran in Manhattan were more "STREETCARS", as they used underground conduits........

Recall, also, that one of the TARS lines up in "da Bronx" passed by the starely NYW&B station headhouse ar E. 180th Street, which today provides access to"Eye-Are-Tee" trains..........

Sobering thought..........
Given what "da Bronx" os like nowadays, I SHUDDER to think of how badly t hose charming old old TARS convertibles (none of which were saved,BTW), or any other rattan-seated streetcar, for that matter, would be trashed, en-route to their destinations....indeed, it was a far different area, back in the day, one far more conducive to public transit vehicles NOT being vandalized.....

On this day in 1947........
The last TAES streetcar lines that served Manhattan proper were replaced by "Soiface" buses.
However, several Bronx lines that operated into hje northernmost section of Manhattan operated until 1948.........

"Soiface" MACKS............
What routes were these lumbering, diesel-driven prizefighters used on?
When were the last retired ? (and what replaced them? Fishbowls?)

A good number of C-45DT's were used on Manhattan routes for years after 1948, but quite a few were diverted to the "Bee O'Tee" for use on their new Manhattan Bus Division routes after they took over the routes formerly run by the Comprehensive Omnibus and East Side Omnibus that September, owing to "Soiface's" default on payments. They were among those that fell into disrepair owing to "Soiface's" 1949 bankruptcy, and were no doubt retired between 1957 and 1963. Then came the transplants, such as those built in 1951 for FACCo for use on their Queens routes - the C-50DT's - first put into "Ess-Tee" "soivice" in 1957; they might have also been the scrappees of 1963. Those might've been primarily in "da Bronx." Finally, there were the C-49DT's ordered by ST between 1954 and 1958. They were also primarily in "da Bronx" but a few were on Manhattan routes (I saw one of the 1956 order running on an M-106 on 42nd Street, in its original red and cream scheme). That lot - 2990-2999 (1954), 800 and 2962-2989 (1956), and 3000-3009 (1958) - would be renumbered 4900-4910 and 4962-4999 in 1963, in their last years based out of Amsterdam depot and holding down the Manhattan routes assigned there, and retired in 1967 when the A/C "batwing" Fishbowls all arrived. It's ironic that the "Pattons" which "Soiface" inherited chicked out sooner than those the "Tee-Yay" ordered in 1956 (6000-series) that ended their "soivice" in the "Isle of Staten."
Before all that, in 1942, "Soiface" ordered some CM-4DE's for use on routes in "da Bronx," but such buses, after only a few months in "soivice," were requisitioned by the Office of Defense Transportation (ODT) owing to something called "World War II." A picture of one such bus can be found below:

W.B.:
Really appreciate your posting this interesting (and detailed!) info;t haks!
Here in North "Joisey", in my general area, several MACK models were commonplace through a good chunk of the 1960s; ;NHBL and SHBL both rostered them.....ditto "CENTRAL AVENUE".
They began disappearing by 1967; if my memory serves me correctly, all were gone by nol kater than lat thane1967/1968.
"ORANGE & BLACK" had a group fleet of MACK "suboibans" through at leastt the mid-1960s.......VERY handsome buses, iindeed!

On the picture taken at 3rd Avenue and 8th Street in Brooklyn, the '3 AV' sign, dating to 1969-70, was laid out the same as in Manhattan, only with differences in the way the colors were printed onto the 24" x 9" sign. |

Interesting info!
BTW:
Dud you notice in the ffirst photo, the "97 JOURNAL SQ." reading on the roller curtain?
Though the 1960s, the "97" was an "INTER-CITY" route; this line ran right by our old aprftment building when I was growing up, running between "The Square" and Paterson.
That sign box obviously came out of an older "INYER-CITY bus;; I remember the line using ACF-BRILL "C44s" and two models of WHITES, and, lastly, Old Looks..........
