PRR's fearsome, monstrous, oft-forgotten "L-5" electrics were the PRR's version of the famed Swiss "Crocodiles".....these were MONSTERS, indeed!

| Thanks, I actually am familiar with the various PRR Electrics because I have a book specifically on it as well as another that deals with all the RR's who adopted electric power. Fascinating stuff. |

Cyberider:
Recall that, for decades, the PRR was the parent company of the LIRR.
LIRR's first MP-64s entered service in 1910; the PRR's entered service in 1915, and ended upoutlasting the LIRR's by several years.
Of course, the LIRR's operated via third rail, unlike the PRR;s, which used catenary.......

The LIRR's first MUs, the MP-41s, predated the MP-54s by serveral years.
They were virtual clones of the the original INTERBOROUGH subway cars of 1904.
Unlike the INTERBOROUGH cars, the LIRR's MP-41s were equipped with vestibule traps and large headlights.
The interiors were also identical to the original IRT cars, even down to the leatherstraps for standees.
These cars were very long-lived,most lasting in service into the1950s..........

LIRR ferryboats.........
It is also interesting to recall that, until 1925, the LIRR also operated ferryboats across the East River, from the foot to of W. 34th Street, Manhattan, to Long Island City (Queens)...............

The LIRR and the CNJ ("The Last Mile")...........
Though quite a few retired LIRR MP-54s were scrappedin New York, many were also scrapped by Nopirano in Newark;railfans loathed this scrap dealer, as it not only scrapped hundreds of historic locos and passenger equipment from Eastern roads, but also, from roads across the country.
LIRR MP-54s purchased by Naporano (which also scrapped hundreds of buses) were floated over from the lIRR's yardsat Long Island City to CNJ rails at Jersey City.
There, sitting forlornly alongside the silent, decaying, echoing Jersey City passenger terminal (closed in 1967) the condemned cars were then towed by CNJ power to the connection with Naporano.
How ironic, that this scrapper also destroyed more than a few pieces of historic CNJ motive power and rolling stock......

The big, brawny GP-40Ps replaced CNJ's icomic "Trainmasters"in 1969; they were also the last new passenger power purchased by the CNJ.
By the 1970s, a number of second-hand through cars were purchased by the CNJ; the ex-AT&SF "Super Chief" cars orihinally ran on E-L diesel routes out of Hoboken about 1968
Trains made up of ex-GN and BN cars were known as "Jersey Builders"...........

Here is a very rare color photo (dating from 1950) of one of CNJ's unique double-ended "Baby Face" Baldwins, seen here at Plainfield, always a very busy commuter stop on CNJ's Main Line (today's Raritan Valley line)
The engine here is seen sporting its original paint scheme............

In this nostalgic 1973 photo, we see a CNJ GP-40P departing Penn Station, Newark, hauling a string of 1920s-era heavyweights, bound for Raritan (train is heading west)
Note the bridge over the tracks; until 1967, it carried CNJ's Newark Branch trains to the Broad Street gterminal, just out of the picture towards the left.
As the bridge sipports catenary for NJT and AMTRAK, it still survices today, devoid of tracks..........

Cyberider:
You are welcome!
When the Geeps and Trainmasters began arriving several years later, they were painted in what became the most recognizable paint scheme;sea green car bodies and gold "toothpaste" stripes.
The Baldwins looked particularly smart in the new scheme.
By the nid-60s, a number of CNJ diesels began to be repainted in what was known as the "austerity" scheme (recall, the CNJ was QUITE short of cash, by the 1960s) which had bland, olive-drab car bodies and no striping.
Only the "Liberty" heralds were retained; some engines, however, retained the original paint yntil retirement......

This rare PSNJ photo from circa- 1935 features the facade of the CNJ's Broad Street (Newark) station headhouse at far right.......

(courtesy: nycsubway.org)
(the "43 UNION" car line went to ASVs in September, 1935)
The stately headhouse housed a broad ramp that led up to the waiting room, train concourse, and Bush trainsheds (these parts of the terminal were demolished in the early 1980s)
The electric isgns on the facade were illuminated at night:
