On 1010 WINS earlier, Larry Mullins shared an amusing "run through" story that he was having a LOT of fun with; earlier this week, several SIR trains near Old Town were delayed by flocks of WILD TURKEYS blocking the tracks! (you CAN'T make this stuff up!)
Motormen had to repeatedly blow the horns to "shoo" the "toikeys" from the tracks!
"Sorry I'm late, boss, but my train was delayed because of wild turkeys on the tracks!"
Larry was chuckling as he he suggested that the motormen reach out of the cab and wave a can of cranberry sauce (or giblet gravy) in their direction(!!)
(and last month, another SI turkey faced off with an MTA bus!)

Reminds me of the section in Stan Fischler's subway books where he writes about the hard (and often dangerous) job of third-rail installers, everything from trying to get cats and dogs hiding below the third rails out of their hidey-holes, shooing mice and rats off the tracks, and even getting butted by goats who somehow wandered onto the tracks. Nothing about turkeys, though. |

W.B.:
Yep, Mr. Fischler indeed reminded us all that subway tracks, tunnels, etc., can often harbor as much "wildlife" as an urban game preserve!
That SIR "toikey" incident earlier in the week would have seemed more commonplace 60-odd years ago, when certain areas of "The Isle of Staten:" were far more "wild" than they are today, once you got away from the town centers and residential areas, before the VZ Bridge was opened........

Thought.........
Given that the SIR/SIRT was/is as much a "commuter" line" as it isa rapid transit line, I've often thought of the MTA ordering modified "M-7s"/9s" for the SIR..........

Also...........
Recall that the "R-62" design was/os radically different than any of the existing SMEEs.
Now, in Philly, on the other hand, if you look at the present MARKET-FRANKFORD "El" rolling stock, you CAN see some "family resemblance" to the old 1960 BUDD "Almond Joys", albeit in an updated form......
