A rare and handsome reminder of a long-ago era in public transportation; a proud veteran of nearly a half-century of solid, reliable service to the residents of Los Angeles.

Sadly, due to gauge, this historic car can never be restored to operating condition.........

"ON TO VICTORY!"

During WW2, many transit operators custom painted select streetcars and buses to boost enrollment in the armed forces.

This was, of course, a patriotic practice also followed in the Los Angeles area.........

Also.......

It is a bit ironic that the last "Red Cars" to operate (on the Long Beach line in 1961) were not even "original", instead, second-hand rolling stock from the San Francisco Bay area; all of the original "Red Cars" had already been retired, and either sold or scrapped..........

The Hollywood Subway....an alternate "view".........

Imagine if the Subway, instead if being built as a a "delivery tube" for interurban cars to travel into downtown while avoiding street traffic, had been built as a true "subway", with multiple underground stops, such as was found in Boston, Newark, and Philadelphia.

It DOES make for some interesting thinking! Very Happy

It was more of a tunnel than a subway.

Agreed; I always thought likewise.

It was, actually, a "SINO" ("Subway In Name Only").

Again, Boston, Newark, and Philadelphia had true streetcar subways, with multiple stations, underground junctions, etc.

Ironically, LA did not truly get a REAL subway until decades after the Hollywood Subway was closed, and the last "Red Cars" disappeared.......

The PCCs..........

Interesting how the PCCs were the only ones ever operated by PE; no other PCCs were ever ordered, nor were any other new cars ever ordered.

It would have been interesting (IMHO) to see postwar PCCs decked out in classic "Red Car" livery, indeed! Wink

That would well explain why these were the only PCCs in the "Red Car" fleet..............

I believe that (1936?) Stooges short was "False Alarms", if I am not mistaken. Wink

See:

This 1941 Three Stooges short (I've mentioned this awhile ago) features a few really quick glimpses of PE PCC trains running back and forth, down the hill from where the Stooges are delivering ice...... Wink
