I believe that Tom Johnson was also the mayor of Cleveland for a term or two and had an interest in one or more of the street railway companies there before they were combined.

Cyberider:

Read of Mr. Johnson's involment with improved streetcar rail, and also the fare boxes (note cities where he was involved in the streetcar lines)............

The very last Johnson "D" fare boxes were used on the Newark City Subway's PCCs (early/mid-1970s)

Also, through the 1960s and 1970s, fares were collected during the PM rush hours at Penn Station (mezzanine level) and Broad Street (platform level) using Johnson "D's".

At Penn Station, the "turnstiles" consisted of several iron railings, with a fare agent stationed at each of several fare boxes (change was given; transfers could also be purchased)

In the AM rush, a similar, smaller-scale arrangement was in place for inbound passengers at Franklin Avenue.

Back when I was raifanning the Subway frequently in the early 1970s, I remember the one-zone fare being 25 cents.....

Newark...........

Newark (NJ's largest city) was the corporate headquarters of both the PS utility and PSNJ transit operations.

PS's presence in Newark MORE than dominated for decades.

Buses served both the bus lanes at Penn Station, and (until closure in the 1970s) the massive PS Terminal.

PS operated numerous interstate and intrastate routes to and from Newark.

With the exception of the City Subway, all street-running car operations ended in 1952; ASV operation on Newark routes ended in 1948........

Trivia.........

When the transit "arm" of PSNJ broke away from the utility in the early 1970s, becoming "TNJ", there was no need to re-letter the buses (or the PCCs); all that was required was to apply new "TNJ" logos over the old "PS" heralds (the PCCs retained the old "PS" insignia until they were all repainted in the mid-1970s)

Interestingly, some buses still displayed their old PS heralds until they were retired, later in the decade.

As noted, he City Subway PCCs, by the mid-1970s however,, were all repainted in the new bicentennial scheme, thus losing their "PS" heralds.......
