Rode a lot of MC-7's in the '70's. Wasn't fond of what came after.

IMHO, the first several series of the MCIs which went to American buyers were the best; good-looking buses, rugged, and reliable.

MCIs seemed to be pretty much the "go to" highway coach for many operators for so many years; this also includes a large number of tour operators, aswell as regional carriers.

Way back in the early 1980s, VERY early in the NJT era, there were a few nice-looking, second-hand "7s" running on the rush-hour express (ex-ORANGE & BLACK "RIVER ROAD EXPRESS") that I frequently commuted on; Fishbowls then still dominated.

According to our highly-knowledgeable friend "traildriver", HAUSMAN BUS SALES was then the new MCI bus dealer, but, also, had a large fleet of retired GREYHOUND buses, which they leased to many operators............

Interestingly, the first Canadian buses to operate in NJ were not MCI's; in the late 1960s, "SOMERSET" purchased several PREVOST "Champions" for commuter service into New York.

These handsome buses had the distinction of being the first non-domestic buses purchased by an American carrier.

It would have been interesting had PSNJ purchased a few of the "Champions"........

After WW2, CCF-BRILL (the Canadian branch of ACF-BRILL) manufactured the 'VOYAGEUR", a 29-passenger intercity bus that was a virtual clone of FLXIBLE's popular "Clipper".

PREVOST also built a number of postwar highway coaches, which also incorporated some FLXIBLE styling, including the rounded, windowless rears and distinctive rear air scoop..........

It was not until the later 1970s that non-GM buses began operating over PSNJ/TNJ routes; these reliable, hard-working buses were part of a nearly 900 bus order by the NJDOT for FLXIBLE New Looks.................

Into the early 1980s, NJT was still operating "first generation" suburban Fishbowls; like most New Jersey suburban carriers, PSNJ purchased their first Fishbowls in 1960.

These were also among the first Fishbowls to be retired by NJT.............

Cyberider:

The Old Look suburbans were indeed in a class of their own; it was clear that, by the mid-1970s, whatever Old Look suburbans were then still operating, that they were soon to disappear.

As I had posted earlier, the very last were the few still operated by "SOMERSET"; these few remaining workhorses were retired in the early 1980s, and, in fact, were the very last Old Look suburbans to run into the "Port-of-Authority".

I grew up with these handsome, classic, buses, and miss them still today........

In 1957, the JERSEY CENTRAL TRANSPORTATION COMPANY (a bus subsidiary of the CRRNJ) was sold to SOMERSET..........
