(SEE PREVIOUS POST)

In this 1970 view, we see "Jetson" #600 assigned to the "B42" (note original roller curtain); note, also both old and new subway cars in the yard, just glimpsed in the background.......

Sidenote:

Just "hoid" on 1010 WINS (courtesy of anchor "Uncle Lar' ", that BIG $$$$ is going to the "Em-Tee-Yay" for the purchase of 400 new subway cars, the last of which are to be on the rails by 2030.

"Uncle Lar' " went on to designate these cars as the "R-68"/"R-68A" ("Brighton Belles")

"Uncle Lar' ':

".......you probably don't know what these designations are, but you know the trains I'm talking about; the old ones with the orange and yellow seats......"

So, it seems that the stalwart "Brighton Belles", the VERY LAST non-NTT equipment on the BMT/IND will be retired at about age 40 (the hulking "Artens"/"Thunderboids" made it to age 40, if you recall, when they were retired in 1989)

The "Brighton Belles" are also the last BMT/IND cars in service to be equipped with roller curtains.

Indeed, an era will be drawing to a close, during the next several tears........ Crying or Very sad

Appreciate the info....thanks!

I guess it would be safe to say, that by that late date, this depot no longer stabled any "Kramdens", or were a few stragglers still on hand?

Were any "Dangerfields" based out of this facility, at that time?

Whatever "Kramdens" were at Flatbush at that point (1972-73) were officially on roster as "resoive." But Flatbush, indeed, did have 100 of the 1964 lot of "Dangerfields" (5001-5100), the last 65 (5101-5165) in the "Isle of Staten." Elsewhere in Brooklyn, there were these:
- East New York: 1970 set 4153-4202
- Fifth Avenue: 1970 set 4000-4099
- Fresh Pond: 1970 set 4100-4152
Not one of any of those known to do "soivice" in Manhattan for the five routes the "Tee-Yay's" Manhattan Bus Division operated.

All of the 1965 lot of "Dangerfields" (5601-5790) were in one basket, literally: the Flushing depot. Along with 55 "Jetsons" and 40 of the 1970-71 set of Fishbowls.

Appreciate the info; just what I was wondering about....thanks! Very Happy

So, Flatbush DID have some "Kramdens" then, even though they were then in "resoive".

I also see that there were indeed "Dangefiellds" on the premises, at that time.

Again, appreciate the "heads up"! Very Happy

Regarding the "Brighton Belles" being retired by 2030.......

I would guess it's a safe bet that there will be a number of "fan trips"/"nostalgia trains" when "the days dwindle down to a precious few".

The "Redboids" ushered out the use of standee straps in 2003; now, in but a few years, the subways will be totally devoid of rolling stock with time-honored roller signs...... Sad

Also hope that at least one set of these now-classic cars will be "presoived"; I'm now wondering if their replacements will be of the "open gangway" variety.........

W.B.:

You might be in "the know" here........

Will the new subway cars that will eventually replace (by 2030) the veteran "Brighton Belles" still be under contract "R-211", or will this be a newer contract order?

Also, are any additional "open gangway" units going to be "poichased"?

Appreciate info.........

From my understanding, the contract set to replace the "Brighton Belles" is to be R-268 (and that to replace the "Eye-Are-Tee's" "Silverboids" to be R-262). Quite imagination from the "Em-Tee-Yay" - NOT!

W.B.:

Thanks for the info; much appreciated.

And, to think, the "R" contract-era dates back over 90 years, now! Shocked

Cannot believe that the "R-62" (aka "Silverboids") have been riding the rails for 40-odd years now; when they were new, I couldn't tolerate them, as they were responsible for killing off my beloved "R-12s/14s/15s". Sad

Am now reminded of the ""The Circle Of Life" from "The Lion King".....things coming full "soical".......... Sad
