Any wonder why roller curtains are particularly rare and costly nowadays?
Just look at the many hundreds of photos (books, online, etc) showing buses, streetcars, and rapid transit cars being scrapped, with their sign boxes and roller curtains still intact.
Small wonder why these signs.....that is.....WHEN you can find them for sale.....are going for a king's ransom, far out-of-reach of the average collector......

Not to mention countless photos depicting rapid transit cars and streetcars being scrapped, with not only sign boxes still intact, but also, headlights, whistles, markers, etc.
Again, small wonder why transit collectibles are as costly as they are these days (in addition, greedy,money-hungry dealers are constant problems unto themselves).........

.......another aspect of transit collecting today in 2026 is that far too many dealers sell sections of roller curtains for prices that are totally unrealistic, and, again, mostly out of the reach of "average" collectors.
40-odd years ago, I can recall purchasing side sign boxes (from "Arnines") for as little as $15.00, and, $35.00 for a set of ("Arnines") bulkhead route/destination sign boxes (again WITH curtains)
Roller curtain segments (bus/subway), way back then, were still inexpensive and, also, still easy to obtain.......sadly, those days are now long, long gone...........

And again, that's SECTIONS of roll signs. If sections are "out of reach" to the average collector, imagine how entire roll signs would fetch - one would have to take out an entire mortgage to pay for it. Frankly, I think cutting up roll signs in this way constitute a desecration and sacrilege.
Didn't entire, uncut roll signs also fetch for double-digit figures back when the Transit "Mew-seem" sell them? |

W.B.:
The "sections" of old bus roller curtains that I have upon my walls mostly came from garage/yard workers, many years ago.
I do have one COMPLETE (cloth) curtain from DE CAMP (I'm leaning towards this being from an ACF-BRILL); I obtained this rare relic from an older collector I once knew well, now sadly passed on.
The subway signs I do have are all in sign boxes (sadly, at this point, only the "Eye-En-Dee", nothing yet from then other two stems......too dang pricey for Your's Truly.
Subway car number plates used to be more than reasonable; I have both metal and "fiberboard" displayed.
It has been well over 20 years now that I picked up any "authentic"" transit memorabilia, outside of a few curtain sections (one from a FACCo bus, reading "15 LIMITED STOPS".
Last I visited the NYCTM (or the Annex Store in GCT, was back in 2002)
Even cap badges (of which I have a number) used to be reasonably priced..
Sadly, those days are now long, gone gone.............

Back around 1982, one of the older fellows who worked the gift shop counter at the NYCTM whom I got to know, during one visit, showed me a VERY old voltage meter which he had been "holding back" for me.
He only knew it was from one of the substations; I could have it for $5.00 if I wanted it (guess who didn't hesitate to open up his wallet and pull out a "fiver"!)
This meter looked ANCIENT even way back then!
Now it is proudly displayed in my transit archives, a historic reminder of the the NYCTM as I once knew it..........
